Living in the U.S. Virgin Islands I was looking to compare our rates to other parts of the world. A couple of things that stand out are that Jamaica, another caribbean island, has far lower rates than ours. Our rates are closer to remote islands in the south pacific which is odd considering we are so close to so many fuel refineries. Why do we pay so much?
Erik Pattisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14713871039963023860noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564242263370831297.post-44645205236641029752013-02-17T08:21:00.001-08:002013-02-17T08:21:09.622-08:00Secret plans for gas exploration in UNESCO World Heritage Site exposed - Survival International
Support Survival International

Secret plans for gas exploration in UNESCO World Heritage Site exposed - Survival International
Erik Pattisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14713871039963023860noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564242263370831297.post-75265403918722924922013-02-08T12:19:00.001-08:002013-02-08T12:19:48.463-08:00IMPLEMENTING THE SEVEN PRINCIPLES - Chickering and Ehrmann

IMPLEMENTING THE SEVEN PRINCIPLES - Chickering and Ehrmann

Excellent article and site dedicated to teaching using technology. Even though information is contained in three simple pages, users who have not been trained cannot perform simple tasks like show the document camera or play a DVD. The only solution is to redesign the user interface to get right down to the basics and eliminate anything that is not absolutely necessary to get the job done. Fewer controls, bigger buttons, plain english command descriptions, etc.
Here's a good link to some theory on good user interface design: http://www.useit.com/papers/heuristic/heuristic_list.html
Subject: Please take action to end famine

Dear (everyone I know),
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to watch ONE’s new video “The F Word: Famine is the Real Obscenity” and sign the petition to world leaders.

http://act.one.org/sign/hungry_no_more/?referring_akid=2621.508342.lFBlAY

The reasons for the famine in the Horn of Africa are complex and solutions are difficult, especially in Somalia, but we can’t lose sight of some simple facts:

1. 30,000 children have died in just 3 months. Thirty thousand. With over 12 million people at risk.

2. Famine is not a natural catastrophe – drought doesn’t have to lead to famine. It can be prevented, as we’ve seen in much of Kenya and Ethiopia.

In the 21st century, it’s an obscenity that people are dying because they can’t get enough food to eat. Every one of those 30,000 children is part of a family – a son, a daughter, sister or brother. We can’t imagine what it must be like to starve to death, but most of us know what it’s like to lose someone we love.

Please watch the film and make use of the voice you have -- sign the petition.

http://act.one.org/sign/hungry_no_more/?referring_akid=2621.508342.lFBlAY

It will make a difference in putting pressure on world leaders to do more to help those in need right now, and live up to promises already made to invest in the things proven to work – early warning systems...irrigation...drought resistant seeds… and of course, peace and security.

Seems like everyone has a laptop, iPad/Pod/Phone, a tablet PC or smart phone so this would allow users to print anywhere on our wireless network and authenticate to our system. Let me know if you have any good leads. PCounter is recommending EveryonePrint which seems to be a good solution with an easy to use interface.Erik Pattisonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14713871039963023860noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7564242263370831297.post-8687255350080618542011-08-18T21:41:00.000-07:002011-08-18T21:41:00.924-07:00Blog publishing from my iPad!

I'm trying out Blogsy for blog writing on the iPad. I've always believed that putting knowledge to practical application is the best way to learn. I'll admit that I may have had a head start on many of these things having seen or worked with them before. Even so I've learned quite a few things and I hope I've at least given a few people something to read. Now that this is done I'm considering connecting a blog to my own personal web site. I'm always trying to learn something new when it comes to technology so I have had fun going through this.
I suppose the important question about all of this is how can we apply these tools for use in the ITS/Library environment? I encourage everyone to think about how you can do something to promote this technology and perhaps even implement it. Remember that as a person providing solutions to others, it's important to allow the people you serve to drive the technology. We are here to show what can be done and what is needed to make it happen. Students first!
Good luck everyone.
